Volunteer stories | Alison

While Christmas is often filled with the warmth of family and festive celebrations, for many, it can be one of the loneliest, most painful days of the year.  A time when isolation, loss and grief are even more keenly felt. We don’t want anyone to spend Christmas Day alone if they don’t want to, so we invite them to join us for a free festive lunch on the big day, or a doorstep visit. Everyone is made to feel part of the Marmalade family!

Alison's story

After her son grew up and Christmas Day changed significantly for her, she sought a way to give back and fill that emotional gap. "I contacted Marmalade Trust to volunteer because I know what loneliness is like. My son has grown up and Christmas Day is not the same," Alison shared.

Her role with Marmalade Trust included delivering Christmas hampers to the doors of members on Christmas Day. "It was very rewarding letting them know Marmalade Trust is there to support them – they help members feel less lonely and enable them to make friends."

Alison’s own experiences with loneliness were deepened after she had a mental breakdown three years ago. Having run her own business for 20 years, she explained how mental illness affected her life: "Mental illness is a hidden killer. I’ve always been proud, so without realising it, I had become lonely because I lost trust in myself."

Volunteering has given Alison a renewed sense of purpose. "I now give my time, which costs nothing, but it gives me a purpose knowing that I’m making a difference to people and leaving them with a smile."

Loneliness can often feel more pronounced during Christmas, a time traditionally associated with joy, connection, and celebration. Yet, for many, the festive period can be the loneliest day of the year. A time when isolation, loss and grief are even more keenly felt.

In a 2018 survey, 17% of people in the UK reported feeling lonelier during Christmas. This year, the challenges of the cost-of-living crisis, combined with the dark winter nights, can make the season even tougher for those already experiencing with loneliness.

We love how Alison's volunteering journey shows how giving back and connecting with others can help ease those difficult feelings, not just for the members she supports, but for herself as well. Volunteering has helped her reclaim a sense of connection, knowing she is spreading kindness and lifting the spirits of those who might otherwise spend Christmas alone.

Join our volunteer family

Each year, our small team at Marmalade HQ are overwhelmed with how many kind people offer their time to support their community.  Through our Christmas Cheer and Marmalade Companion projects, we reach out to those most at risk of loneliness, guiding them to vital support and empowering them to make new friendships and connections.

Joining us as a volunteer not only changes lives but also offers a chance to forge lasting friendships, enjoy meaningful experiences, and truly connect with your community. We are so grateful for the kindness and generosity of our volunteers, many of whom have been with us since the beginning! Marmalade volunteers say they feel supported and valued and enjoy meeting new, like-minded people.
