Hi friends! Meg from Marmalade Trust here. Making friends and new connections can be hard work, especially when we’re feeling lonely. It doesn't help that the clocks go back and we're spending more time indoors too!
As part of our monthly series, we’ve put our heads together to find some opportunities and ways to feel less lonely and build connections in November. As always, comment below or drop us a line on social media to share your ideas!
Get involved with Christmas Cheer
November is the perfect time to sign up to volunteer on Christmas Day. We’re always looking for people to help us bring joy and connection to those experiencing long-term loneliness during the festive season. If you’re based in Bristol, South Glos., or North Somerset, why not get involved? Volunteering is a fantastic way to connect with others and make a real difference to someone’s life.
Can’t make it on Christmas Day? You can still support our work by raising awareness or joining our 1500 Club to help us fundraise, or sign up to volunteer for our Marmalade Companions project, starting in January. If you're not in the Bristol area, check out volunteering opportunities near you over the festive season.
Host a games night
Whether you’re into board games or prefer the digital kind, a games night is a fantastic way to bond with friends and family. You can gather in person for a cosy night of classic board games or take things online for a virtual session with people near and far. Games provide a low-pressure environment to connect with others, laugh, and enjoy some friendly competition.
Not sure where to start? Our team love Linkee, Confident?, Catan and classics like Monopoly and Scrabble. Or venture into the world of online multiplayer games. The key is to have fun and enjoy spending time with others.
Invite a friend to a local Christmas event
November is packed with festive events that provide the perfect opportunity to connect with others. Invite a friend, colleague, or neighbour to join you at a local Christmas market, a concert, or even a bonfire night event. Look out for local listings of Christmas light switch-ons, craft fairs, or community bonfires—Bristol’s harbourside Christmas market or concerts at St George’s are lovely options. Sharing these experiences can really help to lift your mood and bring you closer to those around you.
Raise festive funds for charity
Our team have put together 15 festive fundraising ideas to get you in the festive spirit, have fun and raise funds for Marmalade Trust. Not only will you be raising funds to support our work, but fundraising is also such a good way to make friends, find common ground and generally have a laugh and feel great about yourself! Sounds like a win - win to us! From desk decorating competitions to Christmas crafting afternoons, there's something for everyone.
As November arrives and the nights get longer, it’s important to remember that loneliness is just one feeling among many. Rather than trying to “cure” it, let’s focus on creating opportunities for connection. Whether it’s hosting a games night, inviting a friend to a local Christmas event, or planning for Christmas volunteering, November is full of opportunities to meet others and build new friendships.
So, let’s embrace this new season and all the opportunities it brings to connect with others. Let me know how you get on!
