Christmas Cheer Event Volunteer.
Become a Christmas Cheer Event Volunteer and bring festive joy and companionship to some of the loneliest people in the region on Christmas Day.
What is an Event Volunteer?
As an Event Volunteer, you will collect one or two members from their home and support them during the Marmalade Trust Christmas Day event at a venue (i.e. pub or restaurant) in Bristol, North Somerset, or South Gloucestershire. This year we anticipate holding Christmas Day events in up to 15 venues for 200 members. We aim to match you to members based on location and what (if any) additional support they require. You will be there to create a warm, friendly, supportive, and fun environment for our members and ensure they receive a gift hamper at the end of their meal, as well as getting them to and from the venue safely.
Who are Marmalade members?
Our Marmalade members vary in age and ability, but all experience social isolation and/or loneliness and would otherwise be on their own on Christmas Day. Some of our members may have been isolating at home and could be feeling quite concerned about engaging with people again, so they will require a friendly face and supportive and reassuring volunteers around them.
"It means everything to know someone cares. Without Marmalade Trust, I wouldn't have spoken to or seen anyone over Christmas. I'm so grateful."
To be an Event Volunteer, you must:
Be over 18
Live in Bristol, North Somerset, or South Gloucestershire
Have access to your own transport to get to the event and/or become a Driver Volunteer to also drive members to the event (see Driver Volunteer role)
Be able to give two suitable references for a reference check (if a new volunteer)
Be able to complete an original photo ID check (for new volunteers)
Be able to attend a brief online session outlining your role and answering any questions you might have
Be able to stay for the Christmas day meal and eat with members and other volunteers.
Please note, this role will need you to:
Be friendly and approachable - ensuring members and other volunteers feel comfortable throughout the day.
Be a good listener and communicator - to effectively liaise with and support our members, volunteers, and the venue.
Have an understanding of loneliness and the effect this can have on someone (i.e. loss of confidence in new social situations).
Attend a brief online/in-person session to give you information on your role. This will also give you an opportunity to meet other volunteers.
Receive confirmation on which members and venue you have been matched with, as well as contact details of the Venue Volunteer.
Call members to introduce yourself so that they feel comfortable about who they will be with on Christmas Day.
Select your menu choices. Please note, we kindly ask volunteers to contribute towards the cost of the meal. We suggest a donation of £45 but anything helps.
